Pro tip: Wood pegs are supposed to pierce the insole. You certainly do not want them to extend deeply into the last (because then you’ll break everything trying to pull the last) but they do need to break through the surface of the insole. This way the moisture from the foot will reach the pegs and keep them swollen and tight.
